Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is the hands-on manipulation of the craniosacral system which involves the bones in the skull, the spinal cord, face, mouth, and related membranes, fluids, and attaching bones.  Gentle pressure is used to work with and palpate this delicate system as it relates to the central nervous system and brain.

Craniosacral Therapy Treatments

Many patients enjoy craniosacral therapy for a “tune-up” of their body’s natural healing abilities.  By working with the craniosacral system to enhance nerve conductivity and remove blocks from the flow of the system, better balance is brought to the body and a healthy immune system can be restored and sustained.  CST is a new therapy in medical practice and is still undergoing clinical testing.  Some of the studies to date have addressed its use treating:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autism
  • Concussions
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Stress
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

What to Expect with Craniosacral Therapy

Arrive early for your first appointment (new patient forms are available to download here) to speak with the doctor about your condition(s).  Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to relax during your Craniosacral Therapy treatment.  After an intake analysis, you will be laying on your back and may have pressure applied on your head, to your neck, or even in your cheek (with gloves, don’t worry).  Your comfort is important to us, so please let the doctor know if anything is too much pressure or uncomfortable for you.  Part of Craniosacral Therapy involves clearing any blockages in your lymphs, which is where you might find pressure, but other parts of your treatment will be relaxing as your craniosacral system is realigned.

The number of treatments you will want/need will depend on you.  For example, a patient with an orthopedic problem may find several treatments in the beginning very helpful then come in only periodically as they feel pain or discomfort returning.  You can speak with the doctor about how often to schedule craniosacral therapy treatment sessions at your first appointment.
