Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy (a treatment which began in the early 1930’s as sclerotherapy) is best known for is uses treating musculoskeletal conditions – mainly joint pain.  However, since its inception, its uses have broadened thanks to the development of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Prolotherapy.  We offer both Dextrose Prolotherapy and PRP Prolotherapy at Salus Integrative Medicine.

With both types of Prolotherapy, the purpose is to stimulate healing at the site of the injury by an injection (or many injections) which will cause temporary inflammation with long-term results  Prolotherapy is not a temporary solution, like Cortisone injections designed to block pain, but rather find a solution to the problem by reinforcing the connective tissues.  Prolotherapy is considered a therapy because it is a non-surgical alternative for many patients who many otherwise seek surgical solutions such as a total knee replacement surgery or other surgical joint replacement – even spine surgery.  Prolotherapy’s effectiveness and duration differs with the location of the treatment and the patient.  Multiple treatments will also likely be used to achieve the desired pain relief.

Dextrose Prolotherapy

The injection used in Dextrose Prolotherapy is made up of dextrose, or concentrated sugar water and/or saline water.  This injection is used as a natural irritant to the connective tissues of the body to encourage natural healing at the site.  This is the original version of Prolotherapy and has been well studied and documented to activate inflammation and elevate secondary growth factors including ligament thickening and strengthening of the tendons.

Platelet Rich Plasma Prolotherapy

PRP Prolotherapy uses your own blood which is concentrated for the platelets within, known as plasma. The platelets in your blood contain growth factors.  We use your own blood to create a preparation of platelet rich plasma for your Platelet Rich Plasma Prolotherapy.  The secretion of the growth factors from the platelets will continue in your body after injected longer than the cause-and-effect with Dextrose Prolotherapy.  Both Dextrose Prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Prolotherapy have been compared in studies and found to be effective in treating many of the same conditions, but PRP Prolotherapy stands out for some especially chronic conditions as being more appropriate.  PRP is also gaining popularity for the “Vampire Facelift” which is something we are also able to offer.  Your doctor can evaluate your case to decide on which treatment is right for you.
